Eight-year-old Katrina is on her way to California’s famous gold rush in hope of striking it rich! Along with her older brother Kadyn and her Dad, she travels in a wagon and meets some new, exciting friends! On her adventure she faces some difficult situations, and some learning experiences. But when she gets to California, she discovers that gold isn’t that easy to find as she thought it would be. Even with the help of her family members and new friends, gold and food is scarce. Will Katrina be able to strike it rich? Or will she have to leave without a dime in her pocket?
Author Emma Zhang is a 10-yr old 5th grader. She was born in Beijing, China, grew up in Victoria, Canada and currently lives in California with her parents and a cat named KC. She started writing for fun at school in 4th grade. Her first story was “A walk in the woods.” This book is her longest story so far. In addition to writing, Emma also likes building Lego, making clay, drawing, reading, swimming, and doing gymnastics.

Way to go Emma! We enjoyed reading your story and learning that piece of American history. Loved the encounter with the Indian tribe and the wonderful friendship between the girls from different background. Was indeed worried about Kadyn (even though he can be annoying at times) when he fell sick, and glad that he came through!
